The VR version comes complete with support for Vive’s hand-controllers, letting you realistically aim guns for the first time. Wolfenstein 3D VR is based upon the original shareware version of the game and features ten levels in which you storm the halls of the titular Nazi stronghold, gunning down anyone in your path. Yesterday, the developer (under the fitting name of Further Beyond Studios) released its work with support for the HTC Vive. From today, though, you can actually play the game inside VR itself.Įarlier this month we reported that a Reddit user by the name of Brandalf-the-Green was working on bringing id’s beloved first-person shooter (FPS) even closer to a reality, complementing existing ports of Doom and Heretic in VR.

Episode 3 in Victory of Faith is more or less the meat of The Iron Dream's original mapping.16 years ago now John Carmack and the team at id Software brought us a step further to achieving virtual reality with Wolfenstein 3D. Victory of Faith had episodic flow, but still had the same atmosphere in terms of changed graphics that remained true to the original, and in most cases a fast-paced flow very much inspired by Arielus, Zach Higgins and AReyeP. Getting back to mapping and modding in late 2013, first via the failed Abandon III project, and eventually settling on teaming up with Andy and making Victory of Faith, the original 8 levels from The Iron Dream and their ideas lived on in that particular mod. The burnout of The Iron Dream also rung in the extended period of low activity from Thomas that lasted for a year, at the time by far the longest period of time without any proper Wolfing activity in his life.

Alas, the mod got a quick release, was quickly withdrawn and quickly forgotten. At the time, Thomas felt that Spearfishwolfbones fell by the wayside as some of its levels were deliberately odd, with many of the latter levels from that set being more conservative and in line with what was to come in Thomas' Wolfenstein 3D and eventually the original 8 levels of The Iron Dream. Spearfishwolfbones, on the other hand, featured a design that was more in line with the original 8 levels, but still suffered from shortcomings, for example with the inclusion of what was originally the Ramparts level. Originally featuring a teal ceiling with teal steel panels and green/yellow floor lamps, this particular level suffered from not fitting in very well with the new aesthetic that The Iron Dream attempted to create. Most Overkill levels, certainly those of 2009, usually took up the entire 64圆4 slate and featured heaps of enemies, large rooms, repetitive patterns and many pushwalls and pickups placed in a different fashion than those of the original 8 levels.

Rather than keeping it at 10 levels with a proper boss fight in style with the 8 original levels, it was instead decided to fill out some mapping space with leftovers from an early draft of Wolf Overkill and a handful of already released (though slightly changed) maps from Spearfishwolfbones.Ĭertainly in the case of Wolf Overkill, the level design lost its fast pace and slick design that the original 8 levels had as their approach. While rush-releasing and quickly tiring of projects he had just started is not at all uncommon in Thomas' modding history, The Iron Dream's fate was still odd. The map design in some levels also owes a heavy debt to BJ Rowan and Totengraeber. This idea was quickly abandoned, as initial progress was so fast that a boss level felt like a bump in the road. As an approach, the original goal was to create 60 successive levels with a boss for every ten. As MCS had asked Thomas to beta test the upcoming SDL port of The Golden Episodes for him around this time, its influence is deeply felt in some of the levels. Levels 1-8 were originals, all made in quick succession. The opening level featured the music from DOOM's opening level, another tip of the hat to The Golden Episodes.

The mod was based on Time to Kill, which had been released a few months prior. As that set was loyal to the original Wolfenstein 3D and its limitations, Thomas wanted to try his hand at something that did away with most of the original graphics and sounds, yet retained the atmosphere - sort of a pendant to Totengraeber or even Wolf Reborn. Work on the project started sometime after finishing Thomas' Wolfenstein 3D.
